Default How long do sunflower seeds keep?

One of my characters was given a packet of sunflower seeds with the direction that he plant them someday when he settles down and quits his mercenary career. This could be quite awhile though, months or even years. How long can sunflower seeds wait and still be good for planting? Does it help if they're in a little vacuum-sealed packet?

I think, given that sunflower seeds can be shipped all around the world, and were probably shipped between continents by those huge slow longships from ages past that took forever to get anywhere, that as long as they are dry they will last indefinately, especially in a vacuum.

As long as they are kept dry. Any moisture gets on them and they'll probably start growing and developing roots, and that's when you'll have to plant them or they'll die.

Pretty damn long. My mom's a sunflower seed eater. Of course, in my house they don't last long because, aheh, SHE EATS THEM.

Keep them dry, like Michael said.

Keep 'em dry and they'll keep for a looooong time. Several years. A decade or two I think, in fact.

Randomly, Orion, I think that's a lovely detail and idea.
