I just made another post about this general subject in Writing (but not asking questions), but I do need some information, so I thought I'd give here a go as well.
My latest idea came in an odd package. I have a finished world and I have to build all the details around it, according to a couple of specific parameters that I definitely don't want to change.
This town is to be called Messick Falls, in the foresty, rocky foothills of the Adirondack mountains. The problem with that is that I have no idea where the Adirondack mountains actually are, which poses a problem. What state would I most likely find this area? What climate would it be? Are there are any special quirks about this area I need to know?
Also, I want this town to be very, very isolated. I have the closest settlement being a big town with a big university (this school is important to the backstory) being about 100/150 miles away, which would be a multiple hour drive, especially in that terrain. Any guess of just how long one hundred miles away would take to arrive at? 150? Is this even a good radius to make this small town "isolated?" How many local channels would they probably get on television? Without cable? With cable/satellite? This may seem silly, but it's a point of interest I plan to discuss.
Also, what's a general population that is plausible? It began with a 200-person Indian reservation, and I have the population at about 2,000, but I can easily change this. I want it to be a small, very close-knit town, but it also has a medical research facility, and important biological and botanical facilities, so I need it to be large enough to support these types of things. The town is centralized on a type of flower that only grows there. It has healing properties and has created its own unique ecosystem, and the foundation of the town was for its botanical study, inspired by Indian folklore about the lily. So, besides these facilities for the lily, there isn't really much else, besides some diners, possibly a silly little town museum, and some little stores that sell the necessities people need to live. I want this town to be SMALL. It's important that my character feel trapped with little options. Any suggestions?
