Richard the Lionheart aside, were any of the British kings and queens (up to Victoria) referred to with animal imagery? I've heard Arthur being referenced as akin to a bear or a lion (and after watching Fate//stay night, I'm having a hard time thinking of Arthur as anything other than a cute girl >.<). Of the others, I am very much ignorant, though Henry VIII could have been a female mantis.

While not a monarch, Winston Churchill was called the 'British Bulldog' by the Russians. And I've personally always thought of King James I of England (what was he, VI of Scotland or something) as a jack russell terrier. I don't know why. However, to answer your question: I don't think so, since Richard, but there were probably a fair few before him. My favourite French king is Pippin the Bald :D

Winston Churchill wouldn't work. See, I've got this idea for a steampunk "spaceship" to explore other planes of existence. I won't go into the mechanics in this thread, but I was thinking of naming each of the (3 - 5) vessels after animals. Since it's at the height of a parallel British Empire, I figured that it would be interesting if they were called after former monarchs. So one might be the Lion's Heart.

Hmmm . . . *pops off to dynasties book*
Yes, there were a few. Harold Harefoot ruled England from 1035-1040 and Henry II's wife, Elanor of Aquitaine, was sometimes called, I believe, The Pelican because she brought one as a pet to England, but other then that, no. Just those two I can find at the moment.
I wonder if you could include the little-know Edmund II 'Ironside' (reigned April-November 1016), given you're doing steampunk. :D

I want a spaceship named The Virgin Queen.

Gene: Ironside would be a perfect name for a steampunk dimension ship.

Isabella of France, wife of Edward II of England, was known as the 'she-wolf' - she deposed her husband, put their son upon the throne and then 'carried on' with her husband's deposer.

Ironside sounds more shippy than Longshanks, as far as Edwards are concerned. You could always use the French version, which is what he was known as anyway, as most upper class Britons spoke French while Richard was on the throne (right up till... Richard III I think, but I'd have to check to make sure). Couer de Lion.

Not at the time of Edmund Ironside himself, they weren't. Before 1066 they were still speaking good old Olde English.
