I have to make a 1:12 scale version of a hat a woman might have worn in the 1940s. I want it to be distinctively 1940s, but not part of a uniform if I can help it.
Any ideas?

This is pretty interesting! I've been researching 1940s fashion myself a bit, for my new novel. One very popular style was this (http://www.withaswing.com/hats/40s-hat/40s-hat.gif); however, the wider brim of those hats is a bit more post-war. During the war, hats like these (http://old-clothes.com/images/HAT/HAT6275.JPG) were more common. This (http://dmla.clan.lib.nv.us/docs/MUSEUMS/cc/russellexhibits/exhibits/hats/exhibit2/images/e20021b.jpg) is a nice design, too. And berets, of course, for that military air. ^_^

Fascinators and bright colours seem to have been the go. If you watch the beginning of 'Mrs Minniver', which might be available on youtube, there are some good examples of late 30s-early 40s hats. An important thing to remember, though, is that by the 1940s a variety of styles was popular, so while a few styles were more prevalent there weren't many that screamed 'Look at me, I was worn during the war!!'

Aqua: nah, I'm looking for something an ordinary woman (not sure how old yet, I want her to be in her 20s and unmarried, Mum wants her to be somewhere in her 40s with her kids grown up, but I thought that was a bit sad. :P) would wear. She's been bombed out, and is living with her remaining possessions in a room or two she's renting.
