Do I tip servers in bars/pubs/restaurants? I've not seen it being done and vaguely recall reading somewhere that it's Not Done in Ireland. But I could be wrong, and I don't want to be.

Does one tip in Ireland and, if so, roughly what percentage of the total bill? 10%? 15%? *gulp* ...20%?

If you've heard it's 'not done' as in it's something people generally don't concern themselves with, the restaurant probably won't say no. If you've heard it's Not Done, as in a taboo of some kind, probably best not to do it unless you see a tip jar.

Yes, you tip. I wonder where you heard it wasn't done? O_O It's generally not as HUGE a thing as it can be in some parts of America, but it's considered the polite thing to do! 10% will be fine. ^__^

And I'm not just speaking for my neck of the woods. ;) I checked and it's the same south of the border.

EDIT: ahhhh, wait a second. You tip in restaurants and cafés. NOT, generally, in bars and pubs. That would be a bit weird. Although it's nice to offer to buy your server a drink! ^__^

...how do I tell what's a bar/pub and what's a restaurant? We went into what looked like a pub/bar but it had a bunch of tables and couches AND a bar and they served food so we had dinner as well as a few drinks but then I was like "...I don't think we tip, but just to be safe we can never show our faces in there, again."

Ah, well, if you've eaten food, you tip. ^__^ Although, if you don't, you won't be hated or vilified. It's optional, just considered polite.

Why would it be impolite to tip?

It's impolite to tip in Australia, for the most part. Or at least certainly not required. A few cafes lately have started having tip jars around the place. But until recently, it was totally wtf to tip. And a bit rude.

There is a tip bar at a nice restaraunt I went to a couple of weeks ago. That has been the only time I have seen it there. I know you tip in America, cause I read on a website where you tip and stuff.

o.O

...impolite? Why?

Haha. Since when did traditions and customs have to make SENSE?

...

So I'll work in Australia and take all the tips from the stupid Americans.

I'll make a fortune.

Just work in Soho in London (though get home before 11). The tourists there tip like drunken sailors on leave.

Especially if you wear a plain black shirt just tight and low enough to look classy and hot without being trashy and a touch of lipstick. There's no doubt in my mind that I've been tipped on occasion for the quality of my rack and possibly my booty.

Maybe it's seen as unnecessary pity? Like they feel like you're giving money to a beggar or something. Or it could also be a legal thing; in the U.S. your minimum wage is lower if your pay includes tips.

Snooze: reminds me of a bit in Misfile where Ash gets a job as a waitress and a female co-worker gives the following advice: "There's a one-letter difference between tits and tips." =0p
