View Full Version : A Rather Strange Challenge I Might Regret

So, NiH has been going for quite a while. But 'downstairs', there aren't all THAT many entries. So, by new year, I'd like to see, minimum, these numbers for threadcounts. I was going to just round them up but some of that could make it hugely difficult. It's just sort of sad for me that for some sections we haven't even hit a hundred threads yet.

Writing: 680
Art: 240
Lights Camera Action: 90
Music: 100
Other Things: 115
Q&A: 250
Plot Help: 70

So, think we can do it? :)

huh? plot help?

Its a bit hard to help up the thread count if I've never even seen that section!

And Lights, Camera, Action is kinda hard to post in. Unless we decide to make another movie! hehe.

*remembers other hilarious movies*

o_o I wonder how many NiHites even live anywhere close enough to me to make a movie with >> Hippie is the only one I know of

Pft. Of COURSE we can do it. All we need is Shona and Maulden on board.

And Samula. We should TOTALLY have, like, a NiH-night. Maybe sometime next month after NaNo craziness subsides. Do you have a video camera? >_>

Tundra

Yes, obviously we won't *all* be able to make contributions to *all* forums.
Maybe we should try and get more film making NiHers here...

:D For Xmas I'm getting a microSD card for my cell, so I'll start recording videos about daily life, NaNoWriYe, etc. ^_^

I'm all for more NiH members, especially specialists in some of the less-used areas. There's only one obstacle to that, and that is that movies (music, too) both require a concentrated amount of time in order to properly enjoy, and maybe even multiple viewings to offer constructive feedback.

In contrast, images can be grasped in an instant, and prose doesn't require sustained, linear time--I can read a page or two now, then come back later and read the rest, and I don't have to hit the fast-forward button to find where I'd left off.

I'm not trying to discourage anything--in fact, when I get some more free time, I intend to contribute to those areas. I'm just pointing out a possible drawback, and a possible reason why there's not more contribution there now.

Yes, you may refer to me as a bucket of cold water.

Curse you and your logic, Null. ;) Still, I do think we can pull it off, if we were all willing to try and put that effort in.

Yeah, I know, I'm just terrible!

The thing is, people contribute to the NiH forums not only because they're proud of what they've done, but also because they'd enjoy feeback from their fellows. Movies and music require more effort not only from their makers, but from those who'd like to give constructive criticism (or kudos).

That said, once NaNo is behind me, I'm going to do things for the films and music areas. With luck, before the New Year.

Ah, but the lights camera action area isn't just for the display of videos, it's also for the discussions about the how tos.

I would look at it from the opposite point of view Tundra. You and the others have created a forum that was initially writing/literature based with a strong emphasis on creating a virtual community. You have managed not only to do that but have since assimilated err attracted people who have other tastes such as film editing/making, visual photography and miniature making. The forum has only been going for about 2.5 years and you have managed to attract a wide range of people with interests spanning many different areas.

So do not consider it a failing that there seem to be minamilist posts in some areas, but a bonus that there have been enough like minded posts to create the areas. Who knows, over the next 6 months the Lights section might quadruple in posts due to new members and so on.

BTW, when you mentioned downstairs, I was seriously at a loss regarding what you meant. Literally sitting here for a couple of minutes going WTF? ;)

^ Actually the segments have been there the whole time. :) And I've been aiming, though not very successfully, to have people who are into things other than writing.

Yes Shona, if that smilie is any indication of what you are thinking, then you are quite probably thinking what I originally was. :p

Ahh I see Tundra, well you can obviously notice what section of the forums I visit then when I remember to login. ;)

I could help with a few of those, especially concerning a weird dream I had that I'm going to turn into a story. I will keep this thread in mind and keep posting.

And Gholam, Shona, especially Shona, I think we need to order more bleach :D

But, but the Genepool isn't that inbred! Bleach isn't needed.

I've been trying to scam err convince a couple of people I know through WoW to join but to my knowledge they haven't yet. One being a mother of three and the other a mother of one, with both working full or part time they might not have gotten around to it yet but I'll remind then when I remember. ;)

One of my friend's will have almost/or finished school so I'll remind her again, and point a webcomic to a member here, so that will get her talking :D

I think it might be good to have some sort of a postcount goal too... if that's not to hard. It will encourage people to reply to the threads as well as make them! Maybe to have the postcout 10x the threadcount or something? Dunno, just an idea.

Tundra
December 18th, 2007, 10:17 AM
That could just end up with spam.
What could work is encouraging everyone to increase their own personal postcount by 5%. And not just with 'haha!' responses.

TwistedFirestarter
December 18th, 2007, 10:33 AM
That sounds like a good idea. Though I'm pretty sure I do that already...<_<
