I've got this Victorian guy, in the 1890s... he's made a time machine. What's a way that he could power it? (doesn't have to be realistic at all!!) I was thinking of a combination of clockwork parts, (he thinks electricity is a fad) and some really ridiculous things.

Also, what might be a reason for him creating a time machine?

Wave action! Much fun to be had with giant tanks of moving water...

His wife won't let him do anything that will mess up her decor. :P

The natural power of crystals, and the static caused by rubbing a cat with an amber rod many times very fast. And, naturally, some kind of animal, perhaps a human, in a treadmill.

And why does he need a REASON to build a time machine? He thinks he can do it, so he does. That's human nature. If I could build a time machine, I would, and damn the consequences.

What about a free-range chicken being poked by hermaphroditic orphan midgets? I bet that would provide loads of power. :D

steam
coal
wind-up (like a clock)
mysterious amulet given to by him by an ancient wise man

As for why...why not? Maybe he wants to go back and meet his ancestors, or go forward to witness the lives of his progeny. Maybe he has something to prove to the academic society that ousted him. Maybe he wants to go back and change something horrible that happened in the past or to visit his former self and warn him of things to come. Maybe he's just curious to see if it can be done.

You might enjoy The Time Machine (http://www.gutenberg.org/files/35/35.txt) by HG Wells. It takes place during the same era.

I was thinking something like that, but an army of rodents of some kind of treadmills.

Have him power it by a pair of Hungarian dancers.

Obviously you're all expecting me to say something about sexual energy, so I'll suggest alcohol instead.

Vintage wine, even. You go back to the year of the wine you use :o
