View Full Version : Me again...about running

I have three characters in my story, Faer, Danuin, and Casya, who I need to work something out for.
Danuin is the eqiv of 32/33, hasn't had any real exercise in nine years, and has had a seriously pathetic diet the whole time (Prison food...leaves a lot to be desired). Casya is 16, and simply and average person. Faer is 24, and biologically active. She always has energy to spare, and can run distances and speeds that would exeed most overly active people. Olympic style runners would prolly be able to beat her, but it'd be close.
Because of the bond between Danuin and Faer, he can use her energy to boost his own, like an adrenaline rush, but because the bond is new and not settled yet, it's not very effective. Plus, no amount of adrenaline can make up for the fact that he simply doesn't have the muscle etc. To do certain things.
See, Danuin has this sorta self-imposed need for isolation. His solution is that every time the groups moving, he's seperate from them, and every time they stop, he goes running, as far and as fast as he can. Nowhere special. Then he turns around and runs back. His excuse is that because of the bond with Faer, he has her energy and needs to get it out of his system 'cause he's not used to it and his body doesn't burn it off the way hers does, which is partially true. Casya wants to know what's going on with him, so she tries to follow him all the time.
So there are several parts to the question...the first it how far and how fast would each person be able to run, cross country. I know Casya could prolly out-last Danuin, but the excuse is that he uses the Faer boosts to loose her then shimmies a tree or something. Like I said, it's cross country. That's realistic, right?
The second part needs more explaining. There's an illness in my world, Toxinotion (which needs a better name). The idea is, Gianes (on of my races) create a toxin withing their bodies to act like an immune system. This toxin is filtered out the way waste is filtered from humans. With Toxinotion, the ability to filter this toxin is lost and it builds up, attacking the body. The first thing to go is the muscular system, then the nervous system. Of course, things are effected beyond just strength. Here's a timeline for an average Giane with toxinotion:
Some time towards the end of the first month, they'd loose some of their energy (which Danuin has too much of anyway). After about 6 weeks, they feel sick and dizzy. After anbout 3 months, they'd loose the ability to do any seriously strenuous activities, like sprinting, and they'd be short of breath often. By the end of the seventh month, they'd be constantly worn out and would find it hard to do anything beyond getting up in the morning. Death can occur anywhere between the sixth and the tenth month in an average person.
The second part of the question is this: If Danuin is the one with the illness (not Faer, allthough it starts to effect her about about the fifth month), how far and fast would he be able to run when? How delayed would the effects of the illness be?
Also, how long would it be before Casya (who tries to follow him every day) would be able to catch up with him because he can no longer loose her?
I honestly have no ideas, and it's bugging me no end.
Any help would be SO greatly appreciated!

Hmmm. I didn't take in all of that, but the progression of the disease seems way too slow. It's a toxin that's effective enough to be used as a defense against bacteria and various parasites, and has to be broken down or disposed of by some other means regularly, but takes _months_ to kill when it isn't being disposed of? I dunno, it just seems a bit off, unless the body has other (insufficient) ways to deal with it.

In a pure blood Giane, it would kill in 6-9 days. Danuin isn't a pureblood...he's actually about 6 generations down from the last Giane relative, and the toxin isn't his main immune system like it is in a pure Giane.

That's even worse, it means that his body isn't fully designed to break down or otherwise get rid of the toxin :P

Leave me alone! It works when I explain it in the story...you guys are all just getting the crash course. I have 12 books in my series and it take 5 to explain it, so... :P
