Weird, I just logged out and in again, working fine... bbcentral upgraded the forum earlier today, might have something to do with that :)

Had the same problem, just go into your browsers settings, and delete the cookies for NiH.
Worked for me.

Oh wow it works! For IE, I went Tools-->Internet Options-->Delete Cookies. I just deleted all cookies, because I dunno what good any of them are doing me. And I'm not a fan of real cookies anyhow.

I thought my account had died on me!
But then I went here and was SAVED. Because I don't know what a net-cookie is,let alone why I had to delete them.

And this is why, you should always have the emergency email address in your email account, and you should always have the emergency forum in your bookmarks. Just in case.
But luckily people remembered that you can post as a guest!

Here's exactly what happened:
Everytime you login to the site, a cookie is set. It's basically just a little text file that stores your login details (not your password, don't worry!)
If you deleted this file, you would be logged out instantly.
Last night I upgraded the forum software to the latest version (it fixes a lot of security problems etc). We were running the risk of being hacked, it was quite critical, and I'm sure nobody wanted to see the site defaced, and all the posts deleted :)
I also added some new features (which you can see when you view someone's profile).
I updated the cookie settings, and unfortunately this meant that anyone who has a cookie set already needs to clear it first (or else you'd experience the problem you all just had :))
For anyone still having problems, you will have to clear the cookie for the site. To do that...
Internet Explorer:
Click Tools->Internet Options->Delete Cookies->OK
Firefox:
Click Tools->Options->Privacy->Cookies->Remove All Cookies
If you don't want to delete all your cookies, and only the NIH cookie...
Internet Explorer:
1) Open My Computer
2) Go to C:\Documents and Settings\(Your User)\Cookies\
(Your User) is the person you are logged onto your computer as, ie not 'Administrator' or 'All Users'.
3) Click 'Search' and search for any files with 'All or Part of the Name' having 'notebookinhand'
4) Once it has finished searching, delete any of the cookies that are for NIH
5) Then repeat steps 3 and 4 for C:\Documents and Settings\(Your User)\Local Settings\
(Local Settings is a hidden folder, you may have to type it in yourself to get to it).
Hopefully this helps the rest of you.

I have deleted two cookies: one from the "cookies" folder in C:/Windows, and another from the same root in Temporary Internet Files. According to my brother, who is a part-time programmer, those should be all the cookies. But I still can't log in! Why?

I'm just curious why you don't like the idea of deleting your cookies? I've looked at everything I can think of, even installed CrazyBrowser and still couldn't replicate your problem. After 2 hours I really have no idea why it's not working for you.
If there's a particular reason why you don't like deleting your cookies then that's fine, I'm just curious what it is, because it really shouldn't make that much of a difference, except that you may have to login to a few other sites again.

It's not worth relying on cookies for that though. Because systems can crash, hard drives can fail, data can become corrupted, and being unable to clear your cookies is almost like browsing the web handicapped.
If you forget your password for any site, it should just be a matter of resetting it, which is a fairly painless procedure depending on the site.

^ unless it's anything like the miniatures forum i'm on lol. That one's hopeless at password recovery- they insist on having that thing where you need to type what the picture says, and the picture ALWAYS shows up as red crosses.

Ok, the reason I don't want to delete *all* my cookies is also because my brother has a stranglehold on the computer's functioning, and most of *his* passwords are cookie-stored. I have most of mine stored.
Now, here's something more to the puzzle. ("curiouser and curiouser...") I delete all the cookies related to this site, but when I next log in, it adds new cookies to my computer without actually logging in. I think it would be easiest for us all if I were to create a new account. I've already tried a new password.

Yes, a cookie is also set if you're 'anonymous', ie not logged in.
I don't think creating a new account will help. You won't be able to use that one either.
Let me try changing the cookie settings back to what they were.
Don't panic if you have to login again everyone else, or clear your cookies.

I couldn't log in earlier, but now I can, even though I didn't delete any cookies or clear my cache or anything. Firefox moves in mysterious ways.

I think bbcentral reset the cookie settings back to what they were because of MichaelB not being able to log in. Maybe that's it?

I can't understand why it caused so much trouble, I changed the settings to the same as my own website, which hasn't been a problem for any of my 7200 members...
Anyway, it's all back to the way it was before, I was just trying to keep it open for possible new features later on, but we can work around that if necessary.
