Just wanted to share my good fortune with you all.

First off, the HarperCollins First Look program. Each month, they choose people at random to receive advanced review copies of upcoming books. I've so far received a book every month I've signed up, but that's only been two months so it might be a fluke. Either way, it's fun. Unfortunately, it's US-only. :/

However, WriterSpace also does tons of monthly contests, and the vast majority of those are open to everybody. Most of the prizes are mystery or romance books, but there are also some gift certificates, Godiva chocolates, and other random stuff available. I haven't won anything yet but I Googled it and it seems that other people are winning (i.e., it's not a scam).

And finally, if you are interested in BookCrossing (http://bookcrossing.com/friend/melydia) (which can be participated in anonymously, by the way), there are Official BookCrossing Zones all over the world - in other words, books for the taking. All they ask in return is that you journal the book to let them know that it's in good hands. You can even leave your own books if you wish. Here is a map of all the OBCZs in the world:

That sounds very cool. :) How much does that cost, though? (I just don't like paying for shipping when I could instead wait a little while for the book to come to my bookstore. 8) )

Uh, it's all free, hence the title of my post. ;) The contests cover all costs, and there's no shipping involved with the OBCZ - just walk in and pick one up. :)

I'd heard about bookcrossing (thought it was a really clever idea) and tried to find some of the books in my area, unfortunatly none of them where there ^_^. I'm going to have a good look at the airport tomorrow in the hope of finding one!

Whoa, I should read more carefully. That sounds wonderful!

I love Book Crossing. Now if only I could have some luck in that.

Yeah, I'd really love to be someplace where book crossing was more popular.

You may have to be a BookCrosser to do this (it's free to sign up), but here's another free book available: http://www.bookcrossing.com/freebook

I already have a copy (they offered it free for a while several months ago) but I haven't read it yet. I hear it's interesting.
