Just wanted to share my good fortune with you all.
First off, the HarperCollins First Look program. Each month, they choose people at random to receive advanced review copies of upcoming books. I've so far received a book every month I've signed up, but that's only been two months so it might be a fluke. Either way, it's fun. Unfortunately, it's US-only. :/

However, WriterSpace also does tons of monthly contests, and the vast majority of those are open to everybody. Most of the prizes are mystery or romance books, but there are also some gift certificates, Godiva chocolates, and other random stuff available. I haven't won anything yet but I Googled it and it seems that other people are winning (i.e., it's not a scam).

And finally, if you are interested in BookCrossing (http://bookcrossing.com/friend/melydia) (which can be participated in anonymously, by the way), there are Official BookCrossing Zones all over the world - in other words, books for the taking. All they ask in return is that you journal the book to let them know that it's in good hands. You can even leave your own books if you wish. Here is a map of all the OBCZs in the world:
