I read this on the nanowrimo forums, and I found it interesting. And probably useful for people who are writing quest type novels, or survival stories.
How to field dress a bird (specifically a dove/pidgeon), without plucking.
Put the dead dove on its back. Hold the tail end down with one hand. Place the thumb of the other hand under the ribcage/breast bone and pull up and towards the head. Then you can filet it buy running both thumbs down either side of the keel bone.
Feathers sometimes get imbedded into the meat with the shot. They can be a bear to get out.
