Is this like that Chinese numbers game? The one with the sticks?
Or in my case, cutlery?

Man, the one summer I spent as a camp counsellor, I had my entire cabin of girls going for an entire week on that thing. I promised I'd tell them the secret at the end of camp if they hadn't figured it out, and I had to go back on that promise because it was just so much better to let those who had figured it out savour their victory.
The fastest it took for the first girl out of two or three to get it within the week was about four days. OUt of 8 girls, only 3 got the answer within the space of a week, and the rest probably still hate me to this day.

Chinese number game is the friggin' awesomest game EVER.

Is that what this is like?

OMG YOU KNOW THE CHINESE NUMBER GAME!??!?!??

That is teh awesome. So far it's only been me and my sister and various people who "got it" who know about it, that I knew of. Wasn't sure how widespread it was. ^__^

I love the Chinese number game. I hadn't had that much mind-game-ish fun since I went for a few days at school in grade seven by driving a girl named Jenn absolutely bonkers by going "Do y'hear that noise? Oh never mind, it's gone now."
She actually got super-obsessed with it once I got other people in on the joke and she went so far as to try to convince me to buy a tape recorder to carry around with me so I could record it for her when I next heard it. I started trying to describe the "noise" and yeah I still don't think I ever 'fessed up about that one... Mind you Jenn was a little slow and wound up being very very weird in highschool.

The Chinese number game is more shown than told. Even so, it's got to be under strict secrecy when played--those who figure it out are sworn to honour the code of not giving away the secret. Although if you google it you could probably find the answer--there are knaves on the internet.
Essentially it involves the arrangement of 3 or 4 sticks (depending who you play with--I perfer to use three--it's more challanging that way.) Or you can use cutlery, like I did for a while. They are arranged in a deliberate and specific pattern, and eventually what you see represents a certain number between zero and ten.

And my impressed-ness knows no bounds that Jenvieve got it in three tries. It took me three days straight and a lot of hints from my not-so-honourable-but-kindly sister, who taught it to me.

Jenevieve
March 27th, 2006, 06:36 AM

Nope. There's a purpose to them, and it's easy to figure out. I think it would definitely be easier for some than for others, though. Some would work it out so far and then go "but WHY that?". Others would work out the first part and immediately get the second part. Depends.

We know it's probably a countdown.
With some thought and a calendar, we can determine the date that the countdown is for.
Then all you need to know is what's special about that date. (And it's not my birthday. My birthday's the day AFTER.)
