How do you stop them? Any hints?
**Kind of urgent--I'm out of tissues at the moment.

I get nosebleeds a lot. What I do is have a box of tissues in front of me, and hold one to my nose, pinching the nose at the last bit of soft part before you reach bone, and switch tissues each time I've got blood about to run down my hand. Eventually the pressure from your pinching will slow the blood flow to the area that's bleeding. Also, apparently putting ice on the back of your neck slows the bloodflow to the nose as well, but I've never tried that. Don't lean your head back, no matter what some people tell you - you get blood running down your throat into you stomach for a very nauseating feeling.
I had a small nosebleed myself just this evening. Thankfully, they're getting more rare as I increase in age.

Thanks!
Yeah it's weird because I rarely get nosebleeds--but I've been sneezy sniffly a lot lately and the air hereabouts is very dry...for all it's pissing buckets of rain out and my ears are frozen from the wind and my hair is soaky wet and frizzy...but it's the wind. It's cold and dry, in spite of the fact that it's blowing raindrops the size of ping-pong balls SIDEWAYS.

drop a keyring w/ keys down the back of your shirt
make sure it touches your back
thats it!
I cant believe it works, but this crazy gimmic has done it for me every time i've tried it.

LOT OF TISSUES
squeeze the part of your nose with one hand, (holding a tissue) squeez the bridge of your nose with out a tissue, and put ice on the back of your neck, with your third hand. If you don't have a third hand, then just borrow someone esles.

Yes, the dry air certainly would have done it. It helps to have a humidifier in your bedroom while you sleep -- it keeps the air moist, and so for at least some of the day your nose isn't subjected to the awful dryness. It's worst in winter, I find, because the air in winter is so dry.

^^It's not fair--we're only a few days away from setting the local record for days of straight rain in succession and the wettest winter ever, and yet it's so darn windy and cold and DRY, ironically enough, that I'm chapping inside my nose. :(

I have a nosespray to keep 'em from happening. If it happens alot, ask your doctor, maybe s/he can help.
For stopping, tilt your head foreward, pinch hard right below the bony bit and push up slightly, just for more pressue. Tilt your head foreward or it'll all just come out your mouth, unless you like swallowing blood, which could make you vomit if there's enough of it. An ice-pack on the back of your neck will help constrict blood vessels to slow the bleeding but it dosn't actually stop the nosebleed, so keep pinching your nose for a minute or two after thei ce-pack comes off or it could just start up again. (I have spent entire swim practises like that. Get in the water. Realize my nose is bleeding. Get out. Think that it's stopped. Repeat about five times.)
A humidifier is good preventative mesure but my family dosn't own one so when it gets really bad I just make a habit of takign two good long showers a day, as hot as I can stand them.

Ice on the back of your neck or on your wrist or the inside of your elbow.
This works because there are veins/arteries that are very close to the surface of your skin in the these places, so when you make them colder all the extra blood rushes over to warm up the area thus stopping the blood from your nose.
Hope I helped! :)

I find I only need one tissue to stop a nosebleed. I just cover my nose with it to catch excess blood, and pinch hard. It usually goes away after five minutes.

I've tried that before, Maulden. What happens then is that I get so much blood building up in my nose that it ends up running down my throat into my stomach and I end up feeling very queasy.

i hate the feel of nosebleed blood going down my throat... *shudders at the thought*
but yeh put ice compresses on the forehead and the back of the neck. therefore lowering the temperature of the blood therefore becoming less 'flowing like lava'
sorry for the sickening imagery

Really? I pinch pretty hard though, so while it's painful, it does a good job of keeping the blood flow down. Maybe if you grab your whole nose, it might do the trick... :?

A small piece of newspaper under the tongue stops a nosebleed. Don't ask me how...but it works for me :)

Just reading all your ways of stopping nosebleeds made me grin at how different some of them are.
It said in a first aid book I read to tilt your head foward and put a damp cloth over your nostrils.

Okay, from experience, here's a cool way. Find two slight depressions in the back of your head, like where your two eyes in the back of your head would be if you had them, and press on them. The bleeding stops instantly.

I've never heard of any of these methods except for pinching, which is what I do on the rare occasion that I get one. I pinch pretty hard, and I usually use a damp washcloth, because it's less wasteful.
