View Full Version : 'Read' and 'Unread'

This feels like such a minor problem.. but on my account threads and boards will be marked 'unread' even if I have viewed them, and even if I was the last person to post there. It never marks it correctly, and even the 'latest threads' sidebar is messed up.. is there a way to fix it? It's getting rather annoying.

Hmn. Is anyone else having this problem? (I'm not)

I've always had this problem with NiH. I just kinda ignored it for the most part.

I started having it after the login time changed from 15 mins to 2 hours. It's a small price to pay to keep my posts from being eaten.

I also started having the problem after the login time change.

I had this for a while, where the 'unread' tick would appear over my own posts, but it seems to have cleared up recently.

Hmn. I will pass it on, and try to figure this out, but since I'm not getting it, and it's cleared up for Michael, and Twistie has always had it, are you sure it's to do with NiH and not your settings of some sort? Maybe BBCentral can help with that too.

Not that I have really noticed...mine has seemed ok.

I noticed a change in how read/unread posts were handled around when the log in time was changed. Seems to update slower, is all, as far as I can tell.

The unread/read updates slower?

I'll experiment on that... Thanks for the replies :D

Actually, no...I was thinking about the "new posts" section. My mistake. Apologies. *bows*

From my experience it just highlights the threads that have been posted in today. That is, the 'active' ones.

^ I think that's all it does. Do you think the read/unread thing is just a glitch?

Hi all!
I've just had a look at the forum settings, they look identical to my own forum and I can't see any problems at the moment. I can't replicate the issue either.

What browsers are you all using?
I've tested using Google Chrome and Internet Explorer 8, I haven't changed any cookie settings.

The feature we're talking about here is called "thread marking":
Once a user has been inactive for a certain amount of time (2 hours) all threads and forums are considered read. Individual threads are marked as read within a session via cookies.

So if you login to the forum and don't do anything for 2 hours, all the unread threads will be marked as read. If you view a thread while you're logged in, a cookie will be set to say that you read that thread. It's the second part which seems to be failing for some people, so all the threads are staying "unread" until the 2 hours have passed.

Does that sound like what's happening to all of you?

If you want to help me troubleshoot this, could you go to this page:
http://igx.net/whatami.html
Copy and paste the text (except the picture at the bottom) into a reply here. If I see a pattern it will help me narrow down the problem. If not, I'll have to investigate other possibilities.

Thanks! :)

I'm using Firefox 3.5.3:

appCodeName: Mozilla
appName: Netscape
appVersion: 5.0 (Windows; en-US)
language: en-US
mimeTypes: [object MimeTypeArray]
platform: Win32
oscpu: Windows NT 5.1
vendor:
vendorSub:
product: Gecko
productSub: 20090824
plugins: [object PluginArray]
securityPolicy:
userAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.3) Gecko/20090824 Firefox/3.5.3
cookieEnabled: true
onLine: true
buildID: 20090824101458
javaEnabled: function javaEnabled() { [native code] }
taintEnabled: function taintEnabled() { [native code] }
preference: function preference() { [native code] }
geolocation: [object GeoGeolocation]
registerContentHandler: function registerContentHandler() { [native code] }
registerProtocolHandler: function registerProtocolHandler() { [native code] }
mozIsLocallyAvailable: function mozIsLocallyAvailable() { [native code] }

---

That 2 hours thing is rather annoying. I have a tendency to leave tabs open and if they reset under my nose, it gets...complicated. But yeah, I think that may be the issue -- because sometimes it'll say the thread is unread, even if I'm the last poster. :\

The two hours staying logged in thing was the best I could do really. :( Or it says everyone is logged in all the time, and gets really annoying.

Okay, thank you for looking into it! I can deal, I was just curious if it could be fixed.

There's no reason why Firefox and Safari would have problems, so I'm guessing it's an issue I can't replicate even if I try all 4 of the browsers I have installed.

In the meantime I've enabled Database Thread Marking (as opposed to cookies). It's the most user friendly option, but it can be the most database intensive. I'll give it a try and see if it helps, but if it starts to cause any performance issues I'll have to turn it off. My guess is that it will be fine.

Let me know how it goes :)

I'm having this problem, too, using Firefox 3 or 3.5 (can't remember when I last updated.)
