View Full Version : Suggestion: Stay logged in for 30 minutes?

Now, I don't rightly understand how everything works around here and I don't want to cause unnecessary trouble so forgive me if my suggestion is not helpful/implausible/comes off as rude/whatever. I'm just hoping it could help and it'd make my life a lot easier, so I figure it might be good for some other people too...
I find it nearly impossible to enjoy fora where I'm logged out every 15 minutes. My beloved TTF was like that for a long time and that contributed to those periods when I was away because (especially since I was on dial-up at the time) it could be a lot of hassle to get absorbed in typing one of my rambly replies or reading a long, involved, fascinatingly intellectual thread and then when I actually post or go to the next page or whatever I'm logged out because I didn't remember to keep randomly refreshing the page or looking at something else. I might lose my post and I'm all out of the zone and then you can't tell which threads have new posts anymore...it's still bad now that they changed it to 30 minutes, but it's at least bearable after the other. Is there any possibility a similar change might be made here? For my sanity? Because I really don't feel up to dealing with it as is. And if it's anything like that other forum I'm not the only one.

Yes, I'm also a cat, in addition to a Hobbit. People here probably didn't know that yet...

I don't know if it's NiH's fault, or the cookie settings? I have problems staying logged in too lately, but it seems to be for all forums.

I stay logged in all the time. I checked the 'remember me' box and whenever I open the page I'm already logged in. I've never had any such problems... so maybe it is your CPU.

I'd have to agree with Rosie on this issue, though I don't know if there's anything anyone can do about it. I'd prefer not to leave the "remember me" box checked on a shared computer, which I often use. I never brought it up before because I always assumed that it was my own fault because I type at the pace of a retarded slug. :(

It was a total pain for me, as well. I actually only visit this site on my Netbook now, because of it, as I'm the only person who uses this computer I can leave the "remember me" check clicked. It really was a pain, and still would be if I didn't give in and check the remember me box.

I want to know who you guys sharing computers think is actually going to take the time to go to NiH, see if you're still logged in, and if you are start trolling or whatever.
Things like that don't really happen. Even if they do, that's why Tundra is here to clean it up. Right Tundra?

Maybe they don't want someone at home to see their posts?

I wouldn't click remember me on a family computer either.
Okay well sorry guys, I thought it was just an issue with my dodgy computer, thanks for telling me it's not (perhaps.). I'll add it to the list of things to ask BBCentral, I don't know how to fix it myself.
edit: Turns out I could figure out how to fix it myself, huzzah! It should now stay logged in for 2 hours, hopefully that's not too long for you. And hopefully this will help! I'd have had you be able to stay logged in longer, but apparently it also affects how long you stay in the 'who's online' list.

I'm on a family computer, but we all have separate accounts, so I can click 'remember me' on this account, but if I access NiH from a different account but on the same computer, it shouldn't remember me.
We're a family built on trust, we don't go opening each other's bookmarks, so I like to think I'm safe with NiH remembering me. What have I got to hide, anyway?

^My main concern is that sometimes, I check NiH from a school computer. I don't need some moron hacking into my NiH account, or any other, just for shits and giggles.

But your staying logged in issues are better?

So far, yes! No eaten posts!
...Though apparently there are 60 users online right now...
It's a small price to pay not to have to retype huge chunks of text! :)
Many Thanks!
Also, has anyone else noticed that when you log in, stuff you've already read that hasn't had any new posts still shows up as new? Not a huge problem, though.

...The problem with the system not remember which posts I haven't read yet when I was idle for over 15 minutes was one of the major problems I had with NiH, but I figured it was a necessary evil of the forum software somehow... if that's fixed, then... woot! ^^
(I should note that that happened despite having checked remember me and everything. It never logged me out--or rather, it always automatically logged me back in when I next did anything--but it still forgot.)

Yeah, it seems to have screwed up the who's online and the 'read' articles. If you've been online in the past 2 hours, it'll show you as still being online.

^Unless you specifically log out, I think.

I noticed the change before I noticed this post. But yes...I agree. It used to bug me. But not enough to ask for it to be changed. My fists and keyboards after a post evaporated might think otherwise. :P
It was only this forum, from any computer. But yeah, it wasn't a big deal to me. I was usually on for a couple minutes here, a few there, throughout the whole day so I was used to signing in constantly.
But I am a little happier for the change.
